THE BRIEF
To provide a canopy that provides cover for the prisoners during inclement and sunny weather. The shelters must work in tandem with the prison’s existing accommodation units; on this occasion, they were ‘Bunkabins’.
No groundworks are permitted and the installation needs to take place inside the prison walls whilst prisoners are in their cabins.
THE CHALLENGES
- Working with ‘Bunkabins’ is easy and a known quantity as is working with all of the country’s modular building specialists. Protect Canopies work in perfect harmony with these as they can both be used for permanent and semi-permanent installations. Neither requires any groundworks or footings and both are incredibly quick to install.
- Working within the prison network is something Protect Canopies is more than used to, having carried installations of all sizes across the UK prison estate. Obviously, considerations have to be taken into account and the build method changed to speed up the installation reducing any disruption caused to the prison.
THE SOLUTION
A complete site survey was carried out to verify the size of the canopy required and the layout of the Bunkabins. Unlevel ground means that the Bunkabins don’t always sit at the same heights and the gaps between each can vary.
The dimensions were passed to the design team who created a bespoke 10m x 5m structure. Although we keep 5m x 5m structures in stock, this structure needed to be manufactured slightly out of square.
The varying heights and lay of the land are not a problem as all Protect Structures canopies come with adjustable base plates which allow up to 250mm of difference between legs.
