THE BRIEF
To provide a covered walkway joining two buildings of the day centre together.
THE CHALLENGES
- The ground upon which the shelter is to sit is all at different levels. Some paved, some gravel and some soil.
- The area to be covered is in a quadrant and the existing patch from building a) to b) is slopped and a dogleg left
- Budget being the biggest consideration after solving the issue of providing a canopy ruled out a traditional build.
- Also, after discussions, it became apparent that this outside space would be used a lot more if it was half-covered.
THE SOLUTION
As a traditional canopy had been ruled out for budgetary reasons, Protect Canopies became the obvious choice. But solving the walkway and increasing the usability of the quadrant required a bit more thinking with all of its different levels and tight working space.
Instead of going with a covered walkway, we designed a bespoke double-accessed entrance canopy that joined the two buildings; thus providing a canopy over the walkway and providing additional cover over the quadrant so patients would be able to enjoy the outside space a lot more frequently.
The varying heights and different surfaces were taken into account using our adjustable base plates, these give up to 250mm of tolerance on each leg. And as the concrete blocks can be sited on any surface, this was not a problem either.
The blocks are such a revelation, we can even build shelters on the ground where groundworks cannot physically take place i.e on old oil tanks, as well as deliver for customers who do not want the mess and disturbance of having builders in or just want the flexibility of being able to move the canopy as their business evolves.
